Tip
1: Take Care of Yourself
As
a caregiver for nearly 17 years, I can tell you that hindsight is everything.
Being
in the middle of a home health care situation is highly stressful for
everyone concerned, but it’s important for you—as the caregiver—to
know that you can get through it. If I knew then what I know now, I would
have found ways to take better care of myself while taking care of my
mother.
You
and your homebound loved-one will have a healthier, happier experience if
you ensure that YOU are caring for your own personal needs.
Here’s
My Advice On How to Take Care of YOUR Needs:
•
Get Ample Sleep. Everyone needs a good night’s rest. Make sure you
get one as often as possible.
•
Eat Properly. A healthy diet equals a healthy mind. Try to include lots
of fruits and vegetables with your meals.
•
Take Walks. A little fresh air and a good walk will do your mind and body
wonders. This is an easy way to take care of you—and it’s free,
too!
•
Keep Your Expectations Reasonable. Expect your daily routine with your homebound
loved one to change frequently, and remain open to that! Also expect that
your loved one may not recover as quickly as you would hope.
•
Stay Conscious of What’s Going on with You. Staying aware of your
state of
of
Mind, Body and Spirit may help lower your risk for depression. Depression
can sneak up on you if you don’t care of yourself FIRST.
